Smoke Rise Real Estate

Smoke Rise

Smoke Rise is a residential community in DeKalb County that sits between the City of Tucker and the City of Stone Mountain, on Tucker's eastern edge and just north of downtown Stone Mountain. It is one of the closest communities to SRA Signature Realty's Tucker office, typically reached by way of Hugh Howell Road or Rockbridge Road, a drive of only a few minutes rather than a highway trip.

A Wooded Golf Community Since the 1960s

Smoke Rise took shape as a planned residential community beginning in the 1960s, developed around low-density, heavily wooded lots at a time when much of eastern DeKalb County was still farmland and pine forest. Rather than a single subdivision, Smoke Rise grew as a collection of more than a dozen smaller named neighborhoods, among them Kanawha, spread across a large wooded footprint anchored by a golf and country club at its center. As Tucker and Stone Mountain expanded around it, Smoke Rise stayed recognizable for its low density and mature tree canopy, and much of the community now lies within Tucker's city limits, even though many Smoke Rise addresses still carry a Stone Mountain, Georgia mailing designation, a holdover from how DeKalb County's postal routes were originally drawn.

Ranch and Split-Level Roots, Updated Over Time

Smoke Rise's original homes date largely to its 1960s and 1970s development era, and brick ranch and split-level houses from that period still make up much of the community, many sitting on lots of an acre or more beneath mature hardwoods. Over the decades, owners have renovated and expanded a good number of these homes, and newer construction has filled in among them, so the community today mixes original mid-century houses with updated and rebuilt homes on the same wooded, wide-set lots that defined Smoke Rise from the start. The result is a noticeably lower-density feel than most neighborhoods this close to the Stone Mountain Park entrance.

A Golf Club at the Center, a State Park Next Door

Smoke Rise Country Club sits at the heart of the community on Chedworth Drive, with a semi-private eighteen-hole golf course that has anchored the neighborhood for decades, along with lighted tennis courts and a swimming pool that give residents a shared gathering point without leaving the community. Just beyond Smoke Rise's borders, Stone Mountain Park adds thousands of acres of additional trails, lake frontage, and open lawn space, putting a very different scale of outdoor recreation only minutes away. Closer to home, DeKalb County's Probst Park offers forested walking trails, and J.B. Williams Park adds a skate park and dog park to the mix of nearby options.

Neighborhood Shopping and a Short Trip to Two Downtowns

Smoke Rise itself stays mostly residential, with its everyday shopping centered on Hugh Howell Village, a Publix-anchored center along Hugh Howell Road with a handful of restaurants and shops. For a wider range of dining and retail, residents have two small downtowns within a short drive in either direction: historic Main Street in Stone Mountain Village to the south, and Tucker's own Main Street and Cofer Crossing commercial district to the west, both reachable in only a few minutes without getting on a highway.
